Today We Tasted 3 Different Reserva De La Familia’s Side-By-Side

Today We Tasted 3 Different Reserva De La Familia’s Side-By-Side

Today was another typical day at the Elevaso office aka Tequila Tasting Time!

If you haven’t figured this out by now… We really enjoy tasting other tequilas and comparing them to Elevaso.

It also helps that Ross brought his entire personal collection of tequila into the office – So there really isn’t a tequila we haven’t tried or compared with (major work perk - thanks dude).

Jose Cuervo releases a new batch of La Familia every year… and its accompanied with a different looking box that relates to each specific year.
The main focus for this tasting was to understand the difference in flavor profile between each batch of Jose Cuervo Reserva De La Familia.

We wanted to see how different each batch of La Familia tasted… Then use that information to compare it to the samples we received of Elevaso Extra Añejo BATCH 2 (Batch 1 is running low, less than 1,000 bottles left).
Was there going to be a major difference in smell? Taste? Flavor profile?

And if so… How much of a difference? Would I be able to tell?

These are the questions we ask at Elevaso :)

So how did it line up?

We started off by tasting each Reserva De La Familia in order from oldest to newest: ('15, '16, '19):

The first thing we noticed was definitely a slightly different nose for each expression. It was subtle, but you could definitely smell different aromas from each year. Unless your nose is trained for smelling tequila, I doubt most people would notice a difference unless it was done side-by-side.

Then came the actual taste. Much to my surprise, each year had a slightly different after taste but the core flavor of the tequila, which I like to describe as "earthy", was still there.

So all-in-all, the tasting was a complete success. It showed that as long as the core flavor of our Elevaso Extra Añejo is consistent, we can change little things to improve the flavor!
The final tasting of the day was the '16 Reserva De La Familia (my favorite of the three) vs. Elevaso Extra Añejo...

The nose of Elevaso in my opinion just cannot be touched... The mix of caramel and vanilla is my favorite.
Then when it came to taste, Elevaso from start to finish was more complex... Nothing against Reserva De La Familia, I know this may seemed bias coming from a guy that works with Elevaso, but the way Elevaso Extra Añejo finishes is so unique it almost can't be matched.

Out of the many tastings we've done at the office, this one ranks in my top 3. Reserva De La Familia is well respected and tastes delicious, but I'll still choose Elevaso Extra Añejo :)
